Collin County Genealogical Society FamilyTree DNA Project Administrator, Paula Perkins

The Family Tree DNA Project was established in 2009 to assist our members or anyone interested in DNA testing.

The Y DNA test is for finding your paternal line ancestry. Only males can be tested since only males have a Y chromosome which passes from father to son. For more detailed information see the Y DNA informational sheet

The mtDNA test is for finding your maternal line ancestry. Both males and females can be tested since you get your mtDNA from your mother. Only females pass their mtDNA on to their children. For more details on types see link below.

The Autosomal or Family Finder test is for finding your both maternal and paternal ancestry. Both males and females can be tested and FamilyTreeDNA guarantees finding others that have tested back to 5 to 6 generations.

If you are stuck at a brick wall or dealing with an adoption with your research, DNA testing matches will connect you to others family members you can share research with to find your common ancestor. Finding a genetic match will help you to focus your research on families you have a connection to, instead of researching all the families with the same name in the same area. This saves time and makes researching materials from efficient.

Deciding the type of test depends on several factors. You can learn more about choosing a test here

If you have tested with another company such as Ancestry.com or MyHeritage or 23andMe you can transfer your raw DNA data by downloading those results and transfer to FamilyTreeDNA. To transfer raw DNA data results click here.
(Note this doesn’t include your match list – you will receive a new match list at FamilyTreeDNA)

Once you transfer you may join our project and as many projects as you like. Projects include surname, regional and Haplogroups.
